Teaching Toddlers: What is your name?

I have some pretty stubborn little ones, but then again, who doesn't. One of the biggest things my little ones gave me a hard time with was saying their name. They would just look at me as if I was speaking gibberish. This drove me crazy because it's not like they didn't respond to their names. It was just simply when asked, "What's your name?" They'll avoid the question to the max.

I tried the route of asking them the question, "What's your name?" And quickly respond with their name so they know how to respond. With this showing no progress, I had to figure something out. Being able to say your name is very important, not just for school but safety for the outside world.

One thing these boys love is music. And lately I've been making songs for what feels like EVERYTHING. Which is wild to me because I'm not a singer, but for these kids I turn into a professional singer. So why not make the name song? And guess what, after a few times introducing it to the boys, they were singing along and saying their name! Like it was mind blowing how effortless it was for them because they were both so stubborn for so long!

If you're working on teaching your little ones their name and their music lovers as well, thus might be a great trick for you to try!

Name Song

"What is your name?"

"What is your name?"

"What's your name?"

"Whats your name?"

"My name's (child name)"

"My name's (child name)"

"(Child's name)"

"(Child's name)"

Tip: Work on letting your little one learn the entire song. And as they become more comfortable make it a fill in the blank with their name. Once they are saying their name on their designated part, let your little one sing the entire line "My name's (child name)".

Singing this song throughout the day and even dancing to make it fun are also great ways to ensure success! I hope this helps you as much as it's helped me with my little ones! We're all just trying to prepare our kids for this big world and a lot of times that means getting creative!
