We go through a lot of sensory bins in our home and moon sand is in the rotation as a filler pretty often. The reason being, it's so easy to make and the ingredients are staples in your kitchen! With that being said, it is taste safe for the little ones who are still putting things in their mouth. Keep reading down below if you'd like to make your own moon sand and some fun sensory play ideas to try once you've made your own!
What You Need?
Flour
Vegetable Oil
Food Coloring
Cocoa Powder (Optional) - Great for making "Dirt"
How To Make It?
I usually am pretty big on measurements but the best part about this is you really can eyeball it. And for me it's the best way since I don't make our fillers in bulk.
In a bowl, you're going to add the amount of flour you feel comfortable with your little one playing with. Then you'll add drops of your food coloring to get the desired color. I like to give it a good mix at this phase to help distribute the color. You're going to add in the vegetable oil slowly and mix. Don't add too much, you want the moon sand to be able to mold but also crumble as well.
If you are going for a dirt look, adding cocoa powder with the flour does the trick, you don't need a lot, just sprinkle into the flour.
You can mix this with a spoon, but I like to mix with my hands instead. I can fell the consistent changing and plus it's just relaxing! This is also a great activity to do with your kids too!
