How To Dye Rice For Sensory Play

Updated: Jun 23, 2024

Okay, you see all these cute sensory bins with the colorful rice but where do you even get that from? How do you make it? Well, wonder no more. I'm going to tell you the ways I color rice for my little one's sensory bins.

There are a few ways to dye your rice. Some methods are preferred more than others for various reasons. I've tried many of those ways but one method in particular always give the best results. We'll touch base on other methods but first, let's talk about dyeing rice using paint.

Now if you have a little one that is putting everything in their mouth, this may not be the method for you and that's okay. Scroll down to our next method that is taste safe for your little one!

Using Paint

I love this method because it makes the rice so vibrant, and I don't worry about it staining my little one's hands too.

What you need:

-Paint

-Hand Sanitizer

-Sandwich Bag

-Tray/Pan

You only need 3 supplies to make that vibrant and colorful rice.

You're going to place your rice into the sandwich bag. Add your paint, the more paint you add the more vibrant the color is. Don't worry about how much to add because you can always add more as you go if you're not satisfied with the color. Once the paint is added, you're going to close the bag. Shake with caution, you don't want the bag to pop open and rice fly everywhere (from personal experience, it sucks!). This is fun to do with your little one too! Adding a squirt of hands sanitizer helps to prevent staining with the rice!

Once you have the desired color, pour the rice onto your tray and let it dry. Once it's done you want to store it in an airtight container, or even a Ziploc bag. Now you have rice ready to go!

Using Food Coloring

This method is great for little ones who just can't help but taste their sensory bins. Of course we don't want our little ones eating uncooked rice, but things happen, and those little hands are so quick. So it eases the mind if what they put into their mouth is taste friendly. (At least long enough for mom or dad to intervene).

What you need:

-Rice

-Food Coloring

-Vinegar

-Sandwich Bag

-Tray

You're going to add your rice to the sandwich bag along with your food coloring and a little bit of vinegar (it really depends on how big the batch of rice you're making is) Once this is all added to the bag, close it and give it a good shake. You can always add more food coloring to get to your desired color, I usually add 10-15 drops to start and add more to get the desired color.

Now that you have your rice dyed, next is putting together a sensory bin! Scroll down to see some of our fun Rice based sensory bins your little ones will love!

Super easy to make with red colored rice, candy eyes, orange skittles, and macaroni noodles that have been dyed black for the mouth.

With blue colored rice, candy eyes and macaroni noodles that have been dyed black, the printed-out cookies were optional but definetly a fun addition.

Another personal favorite because who doesn't love the grumpy neighbor Oscar the Grouch. Green colored rice, candy eyes, brown crinkle paper, aluminum foil and paper with hidden trash inside and a few flies, because what's trash without flies???

This is super easy, but super cute as well! With red and black colored rice, throw in a few mickey mouse characters and let the fun begin. Of course the colors will be mixed, but that's okay too! We all know the official mickey colors are red and black anyway, so it's still good for future play!

Going to let you in on a secret, this rice is from our Elmo and Cookie monster bin. That's the best part about making your own rice, you can always revamp them for other sensory bins even if the colors mix!

This is one of my all time favorites and I was so proud at how this came out. Everything in this sensory bin was purchased from the garden section at Dollar Tree. This is also the same rice used from our Oscar the Grouch Sensory bin!

This Elmo sensory bin was made with the same rice from our mickey mouse sensory bin. Having premade fillers helps with cutting down the time of prepping these fun sensory bins.

The rice used from this sensory bin originally was from the cookie monster and Elmo sensory bin, then was used for our Spiderman bin, and now it is being used to help our little ones sort their colors with creepy crawlers. This is how we give our little ones a good time while being budget friendly as well, using what we already have at the house!

This Christmas sensory bin is an oldie but a goodie! The rice used in this bin lasted us the entire Christmas season!

Can you feel the Halloween vibes with these fun colors??? One of the first rice bins where I mixed the colors, and it was definitely worth it. Creating spooky sensory fun for the month of October!

This space themed sensory bin was so fun to throw together. With black dyed rice for the base, black macaroni noodles, black crinkled paper, silver and black foam stars from Dollar Tree, and space themed cutouts to add a little razzle dazzle!

This sensory bin is a mix of rice and oatmeal, the rice is from previous sensory bins shown above!
